USC Still a Strong NCAA Football Team

Although just shy of yet another NCAA Division 1 National title last year, USC continues to perform at an extremely high rate currently at a consistent ranking of #3 (as of September 19, 2006) on the AP Top 25 College ranking system. Heisman winner Reggie Bush being a high draft to the New Orleans Saints highlighted USC’s off-season. Reggie being of such high talent and being chosen by the Saints in a still recovering gulf coastal city, made his selection and playing in the city more than just football, but as a way of bringing together a community. Also all-star quarterback Matt Leinart who was also a significant part of the winning formula was drafted high to the Arizona Cardinals as a back up to veteran Kurt Warner. Also under the shadow of Reggie Bush was LenDale White whose numbers weren’t too far away from Bush’s, but did have off field issues including anger management problems and a significant weight gain before the draft as well as hamstring injuries and lack of workouts that tremendously lowered his stock but the All-American was chosen by the Titans also with newly acquired quarter back Vince Young. Although Reggie Bush and LenDale White were both sharing the tailback position, Reggie was more agile and could change momentums with his great athletics and speed. On the other hand LenDale with his bigger build just bulldozed through everyone to move the ball. Since USC had two tailbacks so talented, but in very different ways, they were an extremely versatile team especially on offense along with pin point quarterback Matt Leinart. With these three gone, people across the nation wonder of USC’s chances this year to win it all as they have done so many times. Here is what they got for this year. They have an incredibly good, yet underrated quarterback by the name of John David Booty who has been under the shadow of Matt Leinart for a few years. But that’s all going to change. He would have probably started on any other team, but he backed up Leinart having good performances whenever he got time. His numbers are pretty impressive last year. He played in 10 games only missing 3. He completed 27-of-42 passes, which by the way is an astounding 64.3%, which is quite good considering the limited playing time. He threw for 327 yards and 3 Touchdowns with only 2 interceptions. Dwayne Jarrett, also returning for junior year should be the number receiver and boost the offense. Last year he had a team-best 91 receptions for 1,274 yards, which averages to about 14 yards per reception with 16 Touchdowns as well! Say what you may but USC is ranked #3 and is undefeated thus far (as of 9/19/06), and the offense seems just good enough to carry the team to another championship season.
